Butterfield Carpark is a purposefully designed multi-storey Herston facility engineered to mitigate flooding risks while enhancing accessibility and urban character.

Positioned on the edge of a busy roundabout, the design responds to the site’s susceptibility to flooding by elevating the structure above flood levels, incorporating an open overland flow tunnel beneath the carpark to improve stormwater management.

The exterior of the five-storey carpark features a custom-made wavy blade screen, which wraps around the structure, creating a distinctive architectural statement. The fluid patterns in the facade reflect the movement of water and traffic, reinforcing a sense of flow and connectivity within the urban environment.

The development provides 354 car spaces, ensuring ample capacity for commuters and visitors. Dedicated office space on Level 1 integrates commercial functionality within the facility, while deep planting along the rear boundary enhances the site’s environmental responsiveness.

Through a considered approach to resilience, urban integration, and functionality, Butterfield Carpark addresses the challenges of its location and enhances the surrounding streetscape. This project exemplifies intelligent design solutions that merge practical infrastructure with contemporary aesthetics.
